Foundations Course

OCTOBER 24-26, 2024

History

In 1979, The Asilomar Program was developed jointly by the California Department of Health Services and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In the early 1980s, the California APIC Coordinating Council (formerly CACC) joined with the Department of Health Services and CDC to provide an opportunity for beginning professionals who have infection prevention and control responsibilities. CA APIC continues this tradition with a biennial educational program; Foundations of Infection Prevention.

Virtual Program

Three-day guided coursework outlining the basic elements needed to work in either a skilled nursing or acute care facility infection prevention department. There will be various lessons spanning the entire breadth of the infection prevention profession, furnished to healthcare in California. The virtual platform will be Microsoft Teams.
This activity is provider-approved by the San Diego & Imperial County APIC Chapter’s California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider No. CEP 3947 for a maximum of
23 contact hours or IPUs

Program Objectives

Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of fundamental infection prevention principles

Apply infection prevention strategies to specific clinical scenarios
Participants will be able to identify and differentiate between standard and transmission-based precautions, implement appropriate measures to prevent common healthcare-associated infections (e.g., CAUTI, CLABSI, SSI), and tailor interventions to the specific needs of acute care or long-term care settings.

Utilize data and surveillance tools to monitor and improve infection prevention practices
Participants will be able to interpret NHSN data, analyze trends in infection rates, conduct outbreak investigations, and use quality improvement methodologies to drive continuous improvement in infection prevention programs.

Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams to promote a culture of safety
