Overview:
Increasingly, infection prevention is an important component to include in the design and construction phases of healthcare facilities. The multidisciplinary construction team works together to identify specific materials, strategies and designs to mitigate potential risks. The goal of this work is to protect patients and healthcare workers from environmental pathogens. Preparing for these tasks requires the team to be familiar with the heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC ) system, water systems and plumbing options, containment barriers and equipment to monitor effectiveness of barriers for construction or renovation.
Objectives:
- Describe the role of the multi-disciplinary team during design and construction in healthcare facilities.
- Review current recommendations and standards for best practices for containment of waterborne and environmental pathogens.
