Has anyone had a recent Joint Commission survey?  If so can you share any hot areas you are aware of?  We are due to be surveyed at the end of the year so I am trying to plan ahead.  Specifically did they look at your COVID vaccinations and any accommodation data?  Thanks!

    Hello Nancy,

I've heard that one area of focus is glucometer cleanliness. It's very important that there is no blood on the glucometers. As always, we want to ensure our care teams are following the manufacturer's instructions for use when performing cleaning/disinfection/sterilization.

    Good luck!

JC came to survey us last week. Here are the infection-control related findings we had:

    1. Limited air pressure gradient problems.
    2. We had an OR that was a little too cold.
    3. Water management plan was not reviewed annually, and did not include evaluation of the patient populations served to identify patients who are immunocompromised.
    4. Ice machine had hard water deposits on discharge chutes.
    5. Chair in ER triage area had tear in upholstery.
    6. HLD Trophon, one employee was not documenting quality control check.
    7. L&D unit, a sterile-wrapped basin was dusty.
    8. Pill cutter had not been cleaned.
    9. Home health - pulse ox was used and not disinfected prior to going back in bag.

We did review all the COVID vaccination stuff for employees/volunteers/students/vendors/contractors/construction.  Tracking/counting has been a challenge. Better software would fix this problem.... currently using the NHSN spreadsheet, which does not calculate things correctly.  And then we have an alternate process for vendors, as well as construction/electrical/plumbing contractors.

All in all - the surveyor had good feedback about infection control. Grateful to be done - our survey was originally planned for last summer.

So a new thing that popped up during our survey - the surveyor asked if there was a competency for me (I am the sole IP in a small independent hospital). That was new, I haven't had one but I am CIC certified. They surveyor said that is a new thing that they are asking for now. So I will have a competency. If you are a sole IP and have a competency, who completed that for you?

    Hi Connie,

This was a question posed to us a couple of surveys ago.  The surveyor said that the CIC showed competency, but if not certified, would need to have someone note the competence.  Like you I am an lone IP so what we did was have the IC chairperson deem me competent for my evaluation.  Sounds like we will probably go back to that process.
