    Hi Fabulous IPs,

We are evaluating our own bloodborne pathogen exposure process and would like to know how other programs are organized for the tasks.  We are and critical access hospital with clinics.

    Questions:

    1. What job role performs the initial evaluation?  Ours is employee health nurse with house supervisor as back-up.
    2. What job role performs the lab requisitions for employee and source testing?  Ours is the employee health nurse with house supervisor back-up.
    3. If prophylaxis is indicated, who dispenses it?  Employee health? Emergency Department? Referred to provider, etc?

If you have a process that works well for your facility and you are willing to share, we sure would appreciate it.  Email: llg04@grh.org

    Thank you very kindly,

Posting a question during a holiday week is a challenge for receiving responses--hoping there may be some IPs that are available to share helpful tidbits with your bloodborne pathogen workflows.  Do you have a process that is working well for your facility?  As we review our processes for improvement--would like to consider incorporating tools/processes that have been successful for your facility.

    Hello Lori

The initial evaluation is completed by our Employee Health (EH) nurse or a House Supervisor if the EH is not here.

We have lab requisitions ready in our packet that our Medical Director has deemed necessary for the employee and source patient. EH, House Supervisor and lab staff can collect the specimens where needed. If the Lab already has the correct blood in tubes, they add it on for the source patient. If not, they will collect what is needed.

Currently, if PEP is indicated, the employee will go to the ED and a provider dispenses it. We are also, looking at this process to see if they need to see a provider or not.

I added a template from OHA, if you want it.
