Name of the session and presenter:
a. Session Name: The Needle: Safe Injection, Infusion, Vials and Point of Care Devices
b. Presenter: Jennifer A Ormsby, DNP, RN, CIC, CPMP-PC, FAPIC and Susan A Dolan, RN, MSN, eCIC FAPIC
2) 3 Key Learnings from the Session
This presentation was full of great information! The presenter reviewed some history and outbreaks of bloodborne pathogens related to breaches in safe injection practices. They also reviewed updated evidence-based guidance/recommendations. Three key learnings/reminders discussed that have encouraged our team to share or review in internal practice include:
a. Disinfect the skin with sterile 70% alcohol using friction for 15 seconds and allow it to dry prior to administration of an injection.
b. Medication prep areas should be located at least 3 feet away from sinks and other water sources. Splash guards may be installed next to the sink if med prep area is within 3 feet. Also consider supplies stored near sinks that could be within the splash zone.
c. IV solutions should be prepared as close to administration as feasible and within 4 hours. Prior to administration they should be kept behind locked doors and discarded immediately after patient use to avoid use on another patient or drug diversion.
3) How you are going to apply those learnings
a. Infection Prevention is planning a "sharps update and reminders" for all clinical staff. This will include some educational tidbits that came from the presentation in addition to items that came up in our internal annual sharps safety survey. We will also be watching for these things in our Environment of Care rounding.
