JOINT CHAPTER EDUCATION:

CALIFORNIA APIC COORDINATING COUNCIL &                      INLAND EMPIRE APIC CHAPTER 074

PRESENT A VIRTUAL CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAM

Thursday, July 18, 2024 from 1:00PM - 2:30PM, PST

Topic: "Global Vaccinations & Antipoverty Vaccines: Science Vs. The Anti-Science"

Speaker: Peter Hotez, MD, PhD, DSc (hon), FASTMH, FAAP

Zoom Meeting Link

Will discuss how we both address vaccine equity and a rising an aggressive globalizing antiscience empire.  Globally, our Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development is accelerating a low-cost recombinant protein vaccines for global health including COVID vaccines released in India and Indonesia, where almost 100 million doses have been administered, and now a new human hookworm vaccine is showing promise to become the second parasitic disease vaccine after the malaria was licensed for the African Continent. In the US substantial progress has been made in vaccinating the population versus COVID19, with the important exception of an estimated 200,000 unvaccinated Americans who lost their lives because refused COVID19 vaccinations.  This antivaccine defiance has evolved over the last 20 years beginning around disinformation claiming vaccines cause autism, but now increasingly around a framework of health freedom or medical freedom.  The health freedom movement is now a political one espoused by some elected officials, news outlets, contrarian intellectuals or pseudointellectuals, and even extremist groups.  It is a complex ecosystem that targets both biomedical science and scientists with dangerous consequences for the nation not only around vaccinations but also other health and science interventions.  It has begun to globalize to Canada, Western Europe, and increasingly low- and middle-income countries.

Overview:

  • Overview and Challenges of Vascular Access Options
  • Hemodialysis with a Central Venous Catheter
  • Pathophysiology of Catheter-Related Bloodstream Infections
  • Management, Outcomes, and Economics of CRBSI
  • Prevention Strategies, Goals, and Guidelines for CRBSI

Summary:

  • Vascular access plays a critical role in the management of various patient types and carries complication risks
  • Despite fistula first initiatives, CVC use is often the necessary or preferred vascular access route but carries an increased risk for CRBSI
  • Biofilm formation is an early complication of CVCs that increases the risk, complications, and treatment difficulty of CRBSI
  • CRBSIs, regardless of site of care, can be detrimental to patients and put a significant strain on health care systems
  • CRBSI prevention may be the key to protecting patients and minimizing the impact of these infections

Please join us for our next Chapter Meeting! This will feature the presentation, "The VAST Difference: Growing a Vascular Access Specialty Team (VAST) Using Data That Demonstrates Reduction in Waste & Variability," presented by Lee Steere, RN, CRNI, VA-BC. Agenda 12:00 PM PDT Welcome & General Membership Meeting 12:30 PM PDT Educational Presentation: The VAST Difference 01:30 PM PDT Live Q&A with Lee Steere Program Description The VAST at Hartford Hospital has and continues to expand its services resulting in less waste, variability and better patient outcomes. Being a Lean hospital, the VAST is using these principles when initiating interventions that have resulted in: cost savings; increase in patient satisfaction; increase in bedside RN satisfaction; increase in billable services; reduction in PIVC complications. In 2019, Lee and his team completed a study that integrated best in class medical devices with evidenced-based practice with each PIVC insertion. This bundle is trademarked as the PIV5Rights. The success of this study was the beginning of their growth as it demonstrated that a skilled clinician placing PIVCs achieves better outcomes than the generalist model. Results of this study will be discussed along with other initiatives this VAST is doing. Learning Objectives • Introduce Lean Thinking as it applies to vascular access and overcoming challenges faced by patients, clinicians & healthcare facilities • Show how a VAST can collect and use quality data to assure they are viewed as a value added entity to their health care institution • Outline the evidenced-based bundle and the clinical and financial results that were captured that began the expansion of this VAST Registration Deadline: Monday, October 4th Meal Provided via GrubHub Delivery Credit. Email with details will be provided 1-day prior to the virtual education. Sponsored by Eloquest Healthcare, Inc. Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP12371 for 1.0 contact hour.
