Recognize the importance of selecting an appropriate antiseptic for surgical skin prep.
• Identify patient considerations, surgical site location, and surgical factors that impact antiseptic selection.
• Analyze the safety factors that must be taken into account when selecting an antiseptic for skin prep.
• Compare and contrast the different types of antiseptics available and determine which is appropriate for specific surgical procedures.

Emergency Preparedness in the Healthcare Setting

She holds an Associate’s Degree in EMS, B.S. in Emergency Management & Homeland Security from the University of Akron, and an MPH from Emory University. She has spent the last decade fostering a passion and enthusiasm for hazard mitigation, emergency preparedness, and incident management in the healthcare setting.

In this session, Emma will discuss all-hazards emergency preparedness & response, incident command in the contact of a health system, and the importance of personal preparedness. Join us for 1.0 FREE IPU!

About the speaker:

Linda Laskowski-Jones is the Editor-in-Chief of Nursing for Wolters Kluwer. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from the University of Delaware, and a post-master’s Certificate in Nursing Administration. She completed the Executive Track in Managing Healthcare Delivery at Harvard Business School. Her professional nursing experience spans clinical nursing, advanced practice, education, and leadership. She served as the Vice President of Emergency and Trauma Services at Christiana Care Health System in Wilmington, Delaware, as well as in other clinical, education, advanced practice and leadership roles. Linda is a trauma center site reviewer for state trauma center accreditation, a member of the Delaware Trauma System Committee and is the State Chair of the Trauma Quality Evaluation Committee and has expertise in state trauma system development. She is currently appointed to the Advanced Practice Committee of the Delaware Board of Nursing and has served as both a member and past president of the Board. She is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. Linda is on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Emergency Nursing and International Emergency Nursing (UK) and has served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Trauma Nursing. She is on the Publication Committee of the Wilderness Medical Society. Linda is an author and national speaker on emergency, trauma, and wilderness topics. She is Past-President of the Delaware Emergency Nurses Association.

This presentation focuses on gastroenteric diseases in long-term care facilities (LTCFs), with a specific emphasis on comparing the epidemiology and infection control practices of two common pathogens: norovirus and C. difficile. The presentation provides a comprehensive overview of the burden, transmission routes, clinical manifestations, diagnostic methods, and infection prevention strategies for both norovirus and C. difficile. By examining these two pathogens side by side, frontline workers in LTCFs can gain valuable insights into the similarities and differences between these diseases and enhance their understanding of effective infection control practices in this setting.

Bethany Phillips MPH, CIC, MLS (ASCP)CM has worked in infection prevention (IP) for over ten years in both the adult and pediatric settings. She currently serves as Director of Infection Prevention & Control for Children's Medical Center Dallas in Dallas, Texas.  She has been an active member of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) since 2016. She previously served at Dallas-Fort Worth APIC chapter for two years as co-chair of the Professional Advancement Committee and is currently the vice chair of national APIC Practice Guidance Committee (PGC). Through her role on PGC she has been a liaison to the Association of the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) since 2019 where she serves on the workgroups developing and revising AAMI guidance documents.
