Honored as the 2024 SBMI Award Winner:
Olayinka Oremade, MBBS, MPH, CIC

Dr. Olayinka "Ola" Oremade is a certified Infection Preventionist and the Patient Safety/Infection Control Manager at Griffin Hospital in Derby, Connecticut. With a medical degree and a Master of Public Health from Texas A&M University, Ola brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the field of infection prevention.
He currently serves as the Chairperson of the Connecticut Hospital Association’s Infection Preventionist Meeting Group and is an active member of the APIC New England Chapter. Ola is dedicated to implementing innovative strategies to enhance patient safety and infection control practices. Ola presented his award-winning project, A Colorful Solution: The Impact of a Novel Color Additive for Disinfectant Wipes on Room Cleanliness and Turnover Time, at the 2025 Spring Conference in May.
Honored as the 2024 SBMI Award Finalist:
Kristin M. Smith RN, MSN, CIC

Kristin has an impressive and extensive background in nursing and infection prevention, with nearly three decades of experience, making her an asset to her field. With a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Boston College and a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from Our Lady of the Elms College, she has developed deep expertise, especially in infection prevention and control. For a little over ten years, she has maintained her role as an Infection Preventionist at Baystate Medical Center, along with the prestigious CIC certification.
Kristin is an active member in APIC at both the national and local New England chapter level. She received the 2021 APIC NE Chapter Leader Award, served two (non-consecutive) terms as chapter treasurer, and maintains active participation with the chapter planning committee. Since 2016, she has been the Chair for the Baystate Health Hand Hygiene Committee, driving initiatives that ensure patient safety and quality care across the system. Kristin’s focus on leadership development, change management, and innovative research reflects her passion for improving healthcare practices and contributing to lasting improvements in infection control and patient safety.
Kristin presented her award-winning project, How Collaboration Led to Achieving Leapfrog Compliance for Hand Hygiene, at the 2025 Spring Conference in May.
