FGI Guidelines -

  • WI has adopted only the HVAC requirements but is in the process of adopting the 2018 guidelines of all three settings along with ASHRAE 170-2017.
  • CMS has adopted the 2012 editions of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 101: Life Safety Code and NFPA 99: Health Care Facilities Code. CMS regulation 482.31 leaves it up to the facilities to determine which standards they will use from the FGI guidelines.
  • DNV states the facility must follow the current edition of the FGI guidelines.
  • TJC states that local, state, and federal regulations and codes must be followed. If state regulation aren't clear, then the 2018 FGI guidelines should be followed for new construction and renovation. Existing buildings must follow the guidelines that were in affect at the time of construction. If current guidelines are more strict, a gap analysis should be done to ensure adequate patient and staff safety.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) - WI refers to all federal guidelines for enforcement
