Summary of the talk: During the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, an employee death prompted a thorough investigation for occupational exposure, an OSHA visit, and subsequent lawsuit. This session will tell the story of one IP's journey through the legal system and defense of the infection prevention program and facility during a global pandemic with an ever-changing landscape.

Summary of the talk: Annually 23000 Americans die from an antibiotic resistant infection while an additional 2 million are infected with an antibiotic resistant infection. Finally, C. difficile infections occur in 250,000 Americans resulting in an additional 19,000 deaths. Antimicrobial stewardship is an important mechanism to address this growing problem. This lecture will discuss the history of antibiotics, the current state of our antibiotic armamentarium and the impact that hospital-based antimicrobial stewardship programs have had to date. Finally, we will discuss the importance of infection preventionists in aiding in the appropriate use of antimicrobials.
